It is not too late to get better sleep.
Allow me to offer 3 foundations of better sleep that has worked for me:

3. Read Fiction to Fall Asleep
Someone reading this article will say, “I can try that for 30 days to see if my sleep improves.”
And your sleep will improve. And that will be the beginning of a better life. Sweet Dreams.
My Story
I went through a period of my life for longer than a year, where my sleep was terrible. There were 99 troubling things in my life. The world was against me. Everyone I cared about betrayed me or abandoned me.
When I would put my head on my pillow, my mind would race. I would be angry and restless and I would re-live mistakes. There was no peace in my mind.
Sleep would not come to me. And if I did fall asleep, I would wake over and over.
I tried alcohol for a while.
That was a gigantic mistake; as my sleep problems became worse.
Then I tried binge watching shows.
Sopranos. Breaking Bad. Old school cartoons.
That didn’t work either.
Staying up until 4 am like a sleep-deprived zombie watching episode after episode, hoping to fall asleep turned me into a sleep-deprived zombie. That was a nasty cycle.
I was tired of being tired.
IF THIS IS YOU, THERE IS HOPE
Read Fiction to Fall Asleep
By some weird luck, I caught my big break when I learned about reading fiction – boring fiction – to help with sleep.
You see, reading fiction allows your mind to be somewhere else – not focused on your 99 problems.
It worked for me the first time I tried it! Not perfectly, but I finally had a night of decent sleep. I chose Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Moby Dick could be one of the most boring works of fiction in existence!
After a few nights of better sleep, I could tell that this was the right path for me.

Quit Drinking Alcohol
I got lucky too, because around this time, I had read Ed Latimore’s personal story of sobriety. Hidden inside an early version of his essay was the phrase, “…most people can’t quit drinking.”
That punched me right in the soul! I am not most people, so I decided to quit drinking alcohol right then and there!
It wasn’t easy to quit. I had cravings every day. I still had tough things in my life to deal with – that I wanted the alcohol to mute. But I did it – I took it one day at a time – and I won.
Exercise Every Day
This was easy for me. I have always been active.
But what if you are reading this and you are not “active”?
The best advice I can give is to:
- Start Slowly
- Commit to 90 days

You don’t need to spend any money on books. Heck, just renew your membership at your local library.
I use Kindle Unlimited for all of my fiction needs. There is tons and tons of fiction; and even more BAD FICTION available for $9.99 per month.

“reading fiction allows your mind to be somewhere else – not focused on your 99 problems. “
Sweet dreams.
