You already know how to brew a perfect cup of coffee. Yes?
Perhaps you use a French Press. Oui? Perhaps you even buy gourmet beans on a monthly basis from your favorite online shop.
Or maybe not. Do you quickly scoop grocery store brand grounds into an automatic drip machine and hope for the best?
What if I were to tell you that an Aeropress can turn your mediocre, store-brand coffee grounds into an excellent and enjoyable cup of coffee.
The flavor you get from an Aeropress is unmatched by any other brewing method.
The control that you have over the flavor makes EACH of your individually brewed cups of coffee a 10 out of 10 EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
- You control the perfect temperature for you.
- You control the perfect type of bean for you.
- You control the perfect amount of grounds for you.
- You nearly* control the perfect brewing time.
If you enjoy coffee and you have not yet bought yourself an Aeropress, let that be your next purchase.
You will enjoy your cup of Aeropress coffee so much that you will want to buy one as a gift for all of your coffee drinking friends. It is a very affordable gift and one that will be used every single day.
HOW TO MAKE THE BEST COFFEE POSSIBLE WITH AN AEROPRESS
Step 1: Turn on your water
I am fortunate to have a Berkey Water Filter. It makes a gigantic difference in the flavor of your coffee (and the flavor of the water I drink all day long). If you haven’t upped your water game yet, put a Berkey Water Filter on your wish list. (And if you use tap water, it is no big deal.)
To monitor your water temperature, any stem-style thermometer that fits in your teapot should work. The one pictured below is probably the first thermometer I bought for myself 20 or more years ago.
I enjoy the flavor of my coffee when it is brewed at 150`F or a touch hotter.
For me 200`F is way too hot. I can’t sip it right away. At this temp, some of the bitter flavors that I don’t enjoy in my coffee seem to become more prevalent.
And at below 140`F, the coffee loses some of the crispness that I enjoy and it is not especially enjoyable as it is now dropping in temperature and needs to be warmed back up.
YOU are going to need to experiment for the exact temps that you enjoy most.
Step 2: Choose Your Coffee Grounds
Believe it or not, my go to coffee is Aldi’s Cafe Bustelo. It is relatively inexpensive with very fine grounds. It brews up nice and strong with no bitterness at all.
When I am splurging, you know as well as I do, that the sky is the limit. Some coffee can be $20.00 per pound or more.
There are many choices. You do you.
If I am grinding my own beans, I grind for a long time and allows those grounds to get tiny. That is me. That is how I roll.
Again, if you are grinding; you do you.
If you do end up buying the Aeropress, it comes with this scoop pictured. It works just fine. It has a long handle to get to the bottom of big bags or containers.
Once again, you will have to experiment with the quantity of grounds you use to make YOUR PERFECT CUP OF COFFEE.
Step 3: Pour Your Water and Stir
Can you smell it yet?
I pour my water somewhat slowly and then stir immediately.
Step 4: Press Your Aeropress
I wait until the water level is almost to the bottom of the Aeropress cup before I press.
If you are patient and only use the weight of your hand to press down the press, you will never have a problem. I demonstrate the right speed and pressure below.
If you force the plunger down, you could have a problem with knocking everything over and spilling your hot coffee.
Also, make sure you have the right sized coffee cup. If you fill the Aeropress to the top and you use a small cup, you could force hot coffee out of the lower vent holes of the Aeropress and onto your hand. ***USE CAUTION HERE.***
Step 5: Clean Up Is Quick And Easy
Compost or trash your coffee grounds? That is for you to choose.
If you can compost that is great. If you use the trash that is okay, too.
Rinse your Aeropress and all of the parts with hot water. Make sure it sees soap on a regular basis. Oils from the coffee and accumulate on the Aeropress, so treat it like all other kitchen items that need regular cleaning.
It is not too late to learn how to brew better coffee.
Enjoy your next cup of coffee and thank you for reading,
